Hitching & Unhitching Step-by-Step (with Safety Checks)
Correct hitching prevents accidents, damage, and towing issues. This step-by-step guide is designed for Mars caravan owners and covers the safe sequence for hitching and unhitching.
Note: Tow setups vary (DO35, ball couplings, etc.). If your coupling has specific instructions, follow those first.
Before you hitch: quick setup
- Park on level ground where possible
- Apply the caravan handbrake
- Chock wheels if on any slope
- Raise/lower jockey wheel to align coupling height
Hitching (step-by-step)
- Align vehicle and coupling slowly (use a spotter if needed).
- Lower the coupling onto the tow point using the jockey wheel.
- Lock the coupling (confirm it’s fully engaged and locked).
- Attach safety chains (cross them if applicable to your setup).
- Connect the breakaway cable (if fitted) to a suitable point on the vehicle (not the chains).
- Plug in the electrical connector and check it seats properly.
- Raise the jockey wheel fully and secure it.
- Release the caravan handbrake (only when fully hitched and ready).
Mandatory checks before you drive off
- Coupling locked and secure
- Chains attached correctly
- Breakaway cable attached (if applicable)
- Jockey wheel up and locked
- Trailer plug connected
- Check lights: indicators, brake lights, tail lights
- Do a slow “pull test” to confirm coupling holds
Unhitching (step-by-step)
- Park on level ground where possible.
- Apply the caravan handbrake and chock wheels if needed.
- Lower the jockey wheel to support the van.
- Unplug electrical connector.
- Disconnect breakaway cable (if fitted).
- Remove safety chains.
- Unlock the coupling.
- Wind jockey wheel to lift coupling off the tow point.
- Move vehicle forward slowly.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Forgetting to lock the coupling (always visually confirm)
- Breakaway cable attached incorrectly
- Chains too loose or dragging
- Jockey wheel not fully secured
- Driving off without checking lights
