5-Minute Pack-Down Checklist (Before You Tow)

Most avoidable damage happens in the last 5 minutes before towing: a hatch left open, a step left down, a loose item inside, or a hose still connected. This checklist takes five minutes and saves a lot of pain.

External walkaround (2 minutes)

  • All external hatches and doors closed and latched
  • Water filler cap secure
  • Power lead disconnected, packed away, and hatch closed
  • External shower/hose disconnected and stored
  • Awning secured (arms locked, fabric secured)
  • Step up and locked
  • Jockey wheel up and secured
  • Stabilisers up (if applicable)
  • Wheel chocks removed
  • Tyres look okay (no obvious damage, bulges, low pressure)

Hitch zone checks (1 minute)

  • Coupling locked and secure
  • Chains attached correctly
  • Breakaway cable attached correctly (if fitted)
  • Trailer plug connected and seated
  • Do a quick light check: indicators, brake, tail lights

Internal quick scan (2 minutes)

  • Fridge latch/door secured
  • Cupboard doors and drawers closed
  • Loose items stowed (kettle, pans, coffee gear, etc.)
  • Shower screen/door secured (if applicable)
  • Windows closed and locked
  • Roof vents set for travel position
  • Gas off (if that’s your travel routine)
  • Pump OFF (recommended for travel unless you need it)
  • Inverter OFF (recommended unless required)

Final step: “one last loop”

Do one final slow loop around the van before you drive off. Your eyes will catch what your brain missed.
