Can I Tow a Mars Caravan With My 4WD, SUV or Ute?

Can I Tow a Mars Caravan With My 4WD, SUV or Ute?

Short answer: probably yes — but it depends on your vehicle's tow rating and the specific Mars caravan you're looking at. Here's how to check properly, in five minutes.

The Three Numbers That Decide It

To tow a caravan legally and safely, your tow vehicle has to handle three things:

  • Braked Towing Capacity — the maximum weight the vehicle can tow (with the trailer's brakes assisting). Must be equal to or greater than the caravan's ATM (Aggregate Trailer Mass).
  • Tow Ball Download (TBM) — the maximum downward force the vehicle's towbar can take. Must be equal to or greater than the caravan's ball weight.
  • GCM (Gross Combination Mass) — the total of the loaded vehicle + loaded caravan. Your loaded total must be under this number.

Where to Find Each Number

  • Vehicle braked tow capacity & tow ball download: owner's manual or the placard on the towbar.
  • GCM: vehicle's compliance plate or manual.
  • Caravan ATM & ball weight: the caravan's compliance plate, or our weights table by model in How much does each Mars caravan weigh?

Rough Tow Vehicle Guide (Indicative Only)

This is a starting point, not a guarantee. Always check your specific vehicle's numbers.

  • Large 4WD wagons (LandCruiser 300/200, Y62 Patrol, Defender): typically 3500kg braked — comfortable with any current Mars caravan.
  • Full-size dual-cab utes (HiLux, Ranger, BT-50, D-Max, Triton, Amarok): typically 3500kg braked, but check GCM carefully — some have a tight GCM that limits how much payload you can carry once hooked up.
  • Mid-size SUVs (Prado, Pajero Sport, Everest, MU-X): typically 3000–3500kg braked. Good fit for the Mars 11S, Jupiter X MKII, Mars 15 Premium S MKIII, Mars 16X. Check GCM for the heavier family models.
  • Smaller SUVs and mid-size wagons (CX-5, RAV4, X-Trail): usually rated 1500–2000kg braked. Generally not enough for the current Mars range, even the compact Mars 11S.

The Trap: GCM

A common mistake — your vehicle is rated to tow 3500kg, your caravan ATM is 3000kg, easy yes? Not always. GCM is the killer. If your vehicle's GCM is 6000kg and the loaded vehicle is 3200kg, you've only got 2800kg available for the trailer — even though the tow rating allows 3500.

Always do the GCM check, especially with dual-cab utes loaded up for travel.

Other Things That Matter

  • Towbar rating: the towbar itself has a rating that can be lower than the vehicle's. Check the towbar placard.
  • Weight Distribution Hitch (WDH): some heavier setups need one. Check your vehicle's manual — some manufacturers require a WDH above a certain trailer mass; others don't permit one at all.
  • Brake controller: any braked caravan over 750kg needs an electric brake controller in the tow vehicle.
  • Tyres: tow vehicle tyres must be rated for the load they'll be carrying with everything loaded.
