Dometic FreshJet 7 Series — How to Use Your Aircon in Your Mars Caravan

Dometic FreshJet 7 Series — How to Use Your Aircon in Your Mars Caravan

The Dometic FreshJet 7 Series is a rooftop air conditioner designed for compact-to-mid-size caravans. It's part of Dometic's FreshJet 7 "inverter" range (smooth, efficient operation) and depending on your model includes cooling, heating, dehumidifying, ventilation and air purification.

This guide covers the basics for everyday use first, then the technical detail and troubleshooting. Always check your official Dometic manual for your specific variant.

Getting to Know Your FreshJet 7

  • Roof-mounted air conditioner unit
  • Interior Air Distribution Box (ADB) with vents and filters
  • Touch control panel on the ADB, plus a remote
  • App/Bluetooth/WLAN control on some models

Controls You'll Actually Use

  • Power — On/Standby
  • Mode — Cooling, Heating (reverse cycle), Ventilation (fan only), Dehumidifying, Auto, Air Purifier (if enabled)
  • Temperature — 16–31°C (mode dependent)
  • Fan speed — Low / Medium / High / Turbo / Auto
  • Lighting — Most ADBs include ambient LED control

Before You Turn It On

  • Stable 240V supply confirmed (mains or correctly-sized off-grid setup).
  • Air intake openings and ceiling nozzles unobstructed.
  • Doors, windows and hatches closed for cooling/heating; blinds drawn on the sunny side.
  • Cooling won't run normally below ~16°C outside — that's a hardware limit, not a fault.

How to Use It — Step-by-Step

1. Turn On

Press Power on the ADB or remote. The unit resumes its last mode, temperature and fan settings.

2. Select a Mode

  • Auto: set a target temperature; the unit decides cooling/heating and adjusts fan automatically.
  • Cooling: set temperature and fan speed for active cooling.
  • Heating: set temperature and fan speed. The fan may delay briefly while the system stabilises.
  • Ventilation: fan-only air circulation.
  • Dehumidifying: reduces moisture without strong heating or cooling.
  • Air Purifier: runs the air purification function (if enabled on your unit).

3. Set Temperature

Range is 16°C to 31°C (in Auto, Cool, Heat and Dehumidify). For Aussie summer, start in Cool at 23–25°C with the fan on Auto.

Don't chase extreme set points (e.g. 16°C in 40°C heat) — the unit works harder, uses more power and may not reach it anyway. A realistic target is more efficient.

4. Choose a Fan Speed

  • Low: quieter — good for sleeping
  • Medium: balanced comfort and noise
  • High / Turbo: fastest pull-down when first cooling a hot van
  • Auto: the unit varies fan speed for stable comfort

5. Adjust Airflow Direction

Rotate the nozzle slats to aim air along the ceiling (best circulation) or down towards the floor. Don't aim directly at people sleeping — angle it past them.

Sleep Mode, Timer, Soft Start

  • Sleep Mode: available in Cooling or Heating. Reduces fan and compressor speed for quieter overnight running.
  • Switch-on timer: schedule the unit to turn on later (must be in standby to set).
  • Switch-to-standby timer: schedule it to stop later.
  • On + Off window: set both times together.
  • Soft Start: on some setups, reduces compressor start-up current — useful with smaller generators.

Running It Efficiently

  • Vent the van briefly before turning the aircon on to dump trapped hot air.
  • Close windows and doors while cooling or heating.
  • Close curtains/blinds on the sunny side.
  • Set a realistic target temperature (24°C, not 18°C).
  • Turn the aircon on early — easier to maintain temperature than to crash-cool a hot van.

Cleaning & Maintenance

External Intake and Rooftop Vents

  • Regularly remove leaves and debris from the air intake and ventilation grilles.
  • Never use a high-pressure cleaner on the rooftop unit.
  • Avoid sharp objects, harsh cleaners, petrol/diesel/solvents.

ADB Housing, Remote & Display

  • Wipe housings with a damp cloth and gentle cleaning agent.
  • Clean the remote with a slightly damp cloth.
  • ADB display: mild warm soapy water only. Window cleaner, alcohol or solvents can damage the acrylic.

ADB Air Filters

  1. Turn the unit off and let it stop running.
  2. Use a flat screwdriver in the filter handle to pull the filters slightly out, then remove by hand.
  3. Vacuum gently, or rinse in lukewarm water if dusty.
  4. Dry completely before refitting.

Check filters regularly — more often after dusty trips.

Condensation Drainage

Check that the condensation drainage channels are clear so water can escape properly.

Troubleshooting

  • Not cooling well: confirm you're in Cool mode; set a lower temperature; check outside isn't below ~16°C (cooling won't run); clean filters; check intake and nozzles aren't blocked; close doors/windows.
  • Low air output: clean the ADB filters; check for blocked outlets/intakes.
  • Water dripping from vents inside: usually high humidity plus drainage issue. Switch off, let any ice melt, confirm the van is level. If it continues, book inspection — seal and install checks may be needed.
  • Unit won't turn on: check 240V supply (lead plugged in, RCD on, aircon breaker on, isolation switch on); replace remote batteries.
  • Unusual rattling or grinding noise: switch off and book service.

Safety

  • Refrigerant and internal repairs are licensed-tech work only.
  • Keep ventilation openings clear; keep combustibles away from outlets.
  • If your unit includes an ioniser/air purifier and you have respiratory sensitivity, seek medical advice before regular use.
  • If you smell burning, see smoke or hear abnormal noises — switch off at the main power and call for service.
