Dometic NRX 80C Fridge/Freezer – Simple How-To Guide

The Dometic NRX 80C is a compressor fridge with a removable freezer compartment, letting you run it as a fridge + freezer, or remove the freezer box to gain more fridge space. This guide covers the everyday basics: turning it on/off, choosing modes, adjusting the cooling level, using the door ventilation (“winter”) position, cleaning, and defrosting.

Quick highlights

  • Removable freezer compartment: remove it to maximise fridge space.
  • Operating modes: ECO (low power), QUIET (low noise), PERFORMANCE (normal), plus FREEZER mode (whole cabinet to -6°C).
  • Cooling level: LED bars show the selected cooling level.
  • Door ventilation latch: a “winter position” keeps the door slightly open during storage to help prevent mould.

Control panel basics (what the buttons do)

  • ON/OFF button: switches the fridge on or off.
  • Cooling level button: changes the cooling level (more LEDs = colder).
  • Mode button: cycles through ECO / QUIET / PERFORMANCE / FREEZER.
  • Compressor / Error LED: shows compressor activity and fault indication.
  • Cooling level LEDs: show the selected cooling level.

How to use (simple step-by-step)

1) Turn the fridge on

  1. Press and hold the ON/OFF button for at least 2 seconds.
  2. The fridge will start with the last used cooling level and mode.

2) Choose a mode (ECO / QUIET / PERFORMANCE / FREEZER)

  1. Press the MODE button repeatedly until the LED for your desired mode lights up.
  • ECO: reduced energy use (cooling levels 1–3).
  • QUIET: reduced noise (cooling levels 1–4). Runs for 8 hours then returns to the previous ECO or PERFORMANCE mode.
  • PERFORMANCE: normal everyday operation (cooling levels 1–5).
  • FREEZER: cools the entire cabinet to -6°C. (Remove the frozen compartment first.)

3) Set the cooling level

  1. Press the Cooling level button repeatedly until you reach the level you want.
  2. Allow several hours for temperatures to stabilise after changing settings or loading warm food/drinks.

Tip: For typical Aussie conditions (15–25°C ambient), an average cooling level is a good starting point. Increase the level if it’s hot, the fridge is full, or you’re opening the door often.

4) Turn the fridge off

  1. Press and hold the ON/OFF button for at least 2 seconds.

Using the removable freezer compartment

If your van setup doesn’t require a freezer section, you can remove the frozen compartment and gain extra fridge space. If you want to use FREEZER mode (whole cabinet at -6°C), the frozen compartment must be removed first.

Door latch “winter position” (storage / ventilation)

If you won’t be using the fridge for a while, place the fridge door (and freezer door, if fitted) into the winter position. This leaves a small gap for airflow and helps prevent mould and smells.

  1. Defrost the fridge first (see below).
  2. Set the door latch to the winter position (vented storage position).

Important: The winter position must not be used while driving.

Cleaning (quick and safe)

  1. Disconnect power before cleaning.
  2. Wipe inside and outside with a damp cloth (avoid abrasive cleaners).
  3. Wipe the fridge dry after cleaning.
  4. Check and clean the condensate drain regularly (blocked drain = water pooling in the bottom).

Avoid sharp tools on ice, and don’t let water drip into the door seals (it can damage electronics).

Defrosting (when and how)

If frost buildup on the back wall reaches about 3 mm, it’s time to defrost to keep efficiency high.

  1. Move food to an esky/cooler if needed.
  2. Switch the fridge OFF.
  3. Leave the door open and allow ice to melt naturally.
  4. Wipe dry, then restart and let it pull down to temp before restocking.

Do not use mechanical tools, heaters, or sharp objects to speed up defrosting.

Quick troubleshooting

  • Not turning on: check your van power is on, the fuse is OK, and the supply voltage is healthy.
  • Poor cooling: reduce door opening time, ensure airflow/ventilation is clear, and increase the cooling level if needed.
  • Error indication: note the LEDs showing and contact service support with the model details.
