Kooltron RCE-140 RV Fridge/Freezer (12V/24V) — How to Use

The Kooltron RCE-140 (often listed as RCE140L) is a built-in 12V/24V compressor refrigerator designed for caravans and motorhomes. It includes a fridge compartment plus a small freezer compartment, with an internal control panel so you can set temperature level, select compressor mode, enable sleep (quiet) mode, and lock the buttons.

Quick Highlights

  • Power: 12V / 24V DC compressor fridge (built-in style)
  • Capacity (typical): ~141L total (fridge + freezer)
  • Controls: On/Off, temperature levels (1–5), compressor mode (Auto / High / Low), sleep (quiet) mode, child lock
  • Battery protection: automatic low-voltage cut-out and cut-in

What’s Inside (Layout)

  • Freezer compartment: small top compartment for frozen items
  • Fridge compartment: main cold area with shelves
  • Fruit/veg bin + storage boxes: lower sections for produce and small items
  • Control panel: usually mounted on the inside left

Control Panel Guide (Buttons & Icons)

Buttons

  • On/Off: turns the refrigerator on and off
  • Child Lock: locks/unlocks the buttons to prevent accidental changes
  • Mode / Buzzer button:
    • Long press: change compressor working mode (High / Medium / Automatic)
    • Short press: change alarm/buzzer volume (often shown as B01–B03)
  • Temperature / Sleep button:
    • Short press: change the temperature level
    • Long press: toggle Sleep (quiet) mode on/off

Common display icons

  • Child lock: buttons are locked
  • Door open: door is not fully closed
  • Defrosting: defrost indicator (if active/required)
  • Alarm: warning or fault present
  • External fan: condenser fan running
  • Fridge running: cooling is active
  • DC: operating on DC supply

How to Use (Day-to-Day)

1) Switching the fridge on

  1. Confirm your van’s 12V system is on and stable.
  2. Press the On/Off button to power the fridge on.
  3. Give it a moment — the compressor may take a short time to start after switch-on.

2) Setting the temperature (Levels 1–5)

  1. Short press the Temperature button until your desired level is selected.
  2. Level 5 = coldest and Level 1 = warmest.
  3. Use this simple rule:
    • Everyday use: start at Level 2–3
    • Hot weather / frequent door opening: move colder (Level 4–5)
    • Cool weather / light use: move warmer (Level 1–2)

Note: Cooling performance varies with ambient temperature, how full the fridge is, and how often the door is opened.

3) Choosing a compressor working mode (Auto / High / Low)

  1. Long press the Mode button to enter mode selection.
  2. Press again to cycle modes, then confirm/select.
  3. A simple way to use it:
    • Auto: best overall balance for most trips
    • High: faster pull-down (getting cold quickly), typically higher power draw/noise
    • Low: quieter/steadier operation once everything is already cold

4) Sleep (Quiet) mode

  1. Long press the Temperature button to enable Sleep mode (quiet mode).
  2. Long press again to exit Sleep mode.

5) Adjusting buzzer/alarm volume

  1. Short press the Mode button to cycle alarm volume levels (commonly B01 → B03).

6) Child lock (stop accidental button presses)

  1. Tap the Child Lock button to lock controls (lock icon appears).
  2. Press and hold the Child Lock button again to unlock (icon disappears).

Battery Protection (Low Voltage Cut-Out)

The RCE-140 has built-in low-voltage protection to help protect your battery. If voltage drops too far, the fridge will shut down, then automatically restart once voltage recovers.

  • 12V cut-off: 10.4V   |   12V cut-in: 11.7V
  • 24V cut-off: 22.8V   |   24V cut-in: 24.2V

Common Tips (Better Cooling + Less Power Use)

  • Pre-cool before loading: get the fridge cold first, then load food.
  • Let hot food cool down before putting it inside.
  • Open the door less: if the door is left open for more than ~5 minutes, the light may flash as a warning.
  • Defrost early: defrost once ice starts building up.
  • Keep ventilation clear: condenser needs airflow to work properly.
  • Don’t set it colder than needed: lower temps = higher power use.

Fault Codes (What They Usually Mean)

If a fault occurs, the display can show an error code and the fridge may beep. A quick tap on any button can silence the buzzer, but the code may remain until the issue is resolved.

  • E01: Low voltage (supply voltage outside the allowed range)
  • E02: Excessive fan current (fan load too high)
  • E03: Motor doesn’t start (rotor jammed or system pressure too high)
  • E04: Speed too low (system overloaded; compressor can’t maintain minimum speed)
  • E05: Electronics overheating (heavy load, high ambient heat, restricted airflow, etc.)
  • Temperature sensor error: sensor may be defective

Fast checks that fix most issues

  • Low voltage (E01): charge the battery, check cable connections, check for voltage drop and undersized wiring.
  • Overheating (E05): improve ventilation, clean the condenser, reduce load, move to a cooler spot if possible.
  • Poor cooling: reduce door opening, don’t overload, ensure airflow behind the fridge and clean the condenser.

Cleaning, Defrosting & Storage

Cleaning

  • Disconnect power before cleaning.
  • Use a damp cloth — avoid abrasive cleaners and hard objects.
  • Keep the door seals dry (water in seals can damage electronics over time).
  • Clean dust and dirt from the condenser at regular intervals.

Defrosting

  • Remove food and store it somewhere cold.
  • Switch the refrigerator off.
  • Let ice melt naturally (don’t use sharp tools to speed it up).
  • Wipe dry and restart.

Long-term storage

  • Switch off, disconnect power, and clean the fridge.
  • Leave the door slightly open to prevent smells/mould.

Note: This fridge is designed for cooling/freezing/storing food and is intended for fixed installation in RV use. If you want a version of this guide tailored to your exact van fit-out (hinge side, wiring, fuse location, and power setup), send us a photo of the fridge label and the control panel.
