Dometic FreshWell FWX4 (Under-Bench Air Conditioner) — How to Use, Maintain & Troubleshoot

The Dometic FreshWell FWX4 is an under-bench air conditioner designed for caravans and motorhomes. It cools (and dehumidifies) your interior without a rooftop unit, distributing air through ducting to interior vents.

Quick highlights

  • Under-bench design: keeps the roof clear and pushes air through ducts to vents.
  • Main modes: Cooling, Heating (model dependent), Dehumidify, Circulating Air, Auto.
  • Remote control: operated via IR (point the remote at the receiver/control panel sensor).
  • Set temperature range: typically 16°C to 31°C (mode dependent).
  • Maintenance: keep vents clear, clean the unit regularly, and service/inspect as recommended.

Before you start

  • Power source: the FreshWell FWX4 is a 240V air conditioner — make sure you’re connected to suitable 240V supply (or an approved power setup).
  • Vehicle angle: don’t run the unit if your van is tilted excessively (aim to level the van at camp).
  • Airflow matters: ensure interior vents and the unit’s intake grille are not blocked by gear, bags, towels, etc.
  • Heat & sun load: close blinds/curtains and seal up gaps to improve performance.

How to use (everyday operation)

1) Turn the air conditioner on

  1. Make sure your van has 240V power available.
  2. Press the Power button on the remote.
  3. Wait a few minutes for the system to begin conditioning to the last used settings.

Tip: If the remote isn’t aimed at the IR sensor/receiver, commands may not register.

2) Choose a mode

  1. Press MODE to cycle through available modes.
  2. Select the mode that matches what you need:
  • Cooling: lowers cabin temperature.
  • Dehumidify: reduces moisture (great for humid weather or drying out the van).
  • Circulating Air (Fan): moves air without heating/cooling.
  • Heating: warms the cabin (only if your FWX4 variant supports heating).
  • Auto: automatically regulates temperature and fan speed to meet the set temp.

3) Set your temperature

  1. In Cooling or Dehumidify, set a target temperature (commonly 16°C–31°C).
  2. Use the + or buttons to adjust.

Tip: If the temperature you set is higher than the current room temperature while in Cooling, it may feel like “nothing is happening”.

4) Set the fan speed (blower)

In certain modes (commonly Cooling, Heating, and Circulating Air), you can select fan speeds: F1 (Low), F2 (Medium), F3 (High).

  1. Press the Fan button to cycle fan speeds.
  2. Choose higher fan for faster pull-down, lower fan for quieter operation.

5) Improve performance fast (hot van start)

  • If the van is very hot from sun: briefly run Circulating Air and crack windows for a few minutes, then switch to Cooling.
  • Turn vents slightly upwards for cooling, and slightly downwards for heating.
  • Keep doors/windows closed as much as possible during operation.

Timer & Sleep function

Timer (start/stop scheduling)

The timer can be used to set a switch-on time, a switch-off time, or both.

  1. Select your preferred mode and settings first (mode, temperature, fan).
  2. Use the timer function to program ON and/or OFF times, then press SET to confirm.
  3. To cancel the timer, use the timer button sequence until the timer symbol disappears.

Sleep mode

Sleep mode is designed for night comfort and may be unavailable in Circulating Air. Activate it by pressing the Sleep button (sleep icon appears).

Cleaning & maintenance

Important: Always switch the unit off before cleaning.

  • Wipe down: clean the housing and air outlet unit with a damp cloth.
  • Vents/grilles: regularly remove dirt from ventilation grilles.
  • Remote: clean with a slightly damp cloth (avoid soaking).
  • Filter care: clean the carbon filter inlet regularly, and clean or replace the carbon filter once per year.
  • Condensation drainage: check drainage channels are clear so condensation water can escape.
  • Annual check: have the heat exchanger maintained by a qualified workshop (recommended annually).

Avoid: high-pressure cleaners, harsh solvents (petrol/diesel/solvents), and sharp tools.

Troubleshooting (quick checks)

No cooling / weak cooling

  • Confirm the unit is in Cooling mode (not Fan/Circulating Air).
  • Set a lower temperature than the current room temp.
  • Close blinds and doors/windows; reduce heat load.
  • Check intake and vents are not blocked.
  • Clean/replace the filter if it’s due.

Water/condensation issues

  • Check the condensation drainage channels are clear.

Remote not working properly

  • Aim the remote at the IR sensor/receiver.
  • Replace the batteries (typically 2 x AAA) if the battery indicator shows low.

If problems persist: stop using the unit and contact an authorised service agent.

Good to know

  • Different variants exist: FWX4 models can vary (cooling/heating capacity and features). If unsure, check the compliance plate/model code on your unit.
  • Ambient operating range: performance may be limited outside the recommended ambient temperature range.
